May 7, 2013: In June of 2008 we announced "Scott Gainey Comes to Xavier." Now it is time to announce that Scott Gainey is stepping down as Head Coach of our hockey program. In his five seasons as head coach, Xavier's varsity hockey enjoyed 4 winning seasons and a combined record of 59-44-5, including 6 post-season games where the team record was 2-4.
Before coming to Xavier, Gainey had 14 years of coaching experience at the high school level, including 9 years as an assistant and 5 years as Head Coach at Conard High School. After a 3 year career playing minor pro hockey, he began his coaching career as a member of the NHL's Florida Panthers power skating staff, working with minor league players in the Panthers organization.
At Xavier, he stated his objective was “to guide student-athletes towards becoming responsible, respectful and accountable young men. I want to instill in my players the importance of self-discipline, work ethic and accountability while in a structured team environment." Scott will now join the staff of South Kent School and the Selects Hockey U-18 National team.
Director of Athletics Anthony Jaskot `69 said, “We are pleased to have had Scott Gainey as our third head hockey coach at Xavier and we wish him well in his future.
