Getting to know Xavier High School... getting to know the Xaverian values ... getting to know the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools network ... getting to know God ... getting to know Christian service ... getting to know yourself.
It was all part of the freshman retreat Tuesday at Xavier.
Life is a process, and so is the four years at Xavier. Not that long ago, the peer ministers present to help lead the freshmen during this retreat were also in their first year here. Now they are seniors ... and leaders.
At one point Tuesday the freshmen were broken into small discussion groups with peer ministers in each. The subject: getting to know the Xaverian values of humility, trust, zeal, compassion and simplicity. The groups talked about what it meant to them, then one person volunteered to present.
A few things said about humility: "Be selfless instead of being selfish;" "it is the opposite of arrogant;" and "be humble."
On trust: "Having faith;" and "trusting that God will put you on the right path."
On simplicity: "Don't have so many things that you clutter out God ... remain in contact with God but also sort out other things in daily life."
On zeal: "Being honorable and respectful, and bringing positive energy to whatever you're doing."
On compassion: "It allows us to see what we can do to help others;" "caring for the well being of others and God's creation;" and "putting yourself in someone else's shoes."
In the "getting to know yourself" small group discussion the freshmen were asked to name three unique gifts or talents that they have. Then the challenge is how to use them to help serve others.
The retreat concluded with a teaching Mass, in which Father Michael Dolan not only said Mass but explained what he was doing, why he was doing it and its meaning. As the gifts were being brought to the altar, he did remind everyone to ask themselves what they were doing with their gifts from God.
The day was another step in the journey as freshman year continues.
