It was a busy week for Xavier spring athletes. For instance, the golf team had matches on three consecutive days. The baseball team had back-to-back big wins against Staples and Sheehan. Here's your weekly recap:


Xavier upset Staples 3-2 last Saturday. Nick Salemi had two hits and two RBI for Xavier. Winning pitcher John Ruggiero allowed six hits and went the distance for his first varsity win. He's only a sophomore. Staples, ranked fifth in The GameTimeCT poll, came into that game 3-0, having outscored its opponents 40-6. ... The Falcons then defeated Sheehan 6-2 with a five-run fifth inning Tuesday. Bryce Pill went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Drew Kron doubled and had two RBs for Xavier. Tyler Lemay was the winning pitcher. ... On Wednesday Notre Dame of West Haven beat Xavier 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bryce Hammen and Nick DeBrizzi each had two hits for Xavier.


Xavier lost 153-146 Tuesday to Notre Dame at Racebrook Country Club. Tommy Rosatti of Notre Dame was medalist with a 32. For Xavier, Chris Fosdick had a 34, Kevin Lynch a 35, Patrick Kennedy a 42, and Ryan Holgerson a 42. ... On Wednesday, Xavier bounced back to defeat Fairfield Prep 159-168 at Portland Golf Club with Fosdick the medalist with a 33. Lynch had a 38 and Chris Drisdelle a 43. ... On Thursday the Falcons beat Branford 159-201 to improve to 3-1. Fosdick and Lynch each shot a 37 and were co-medalists at Pine Orchard CC. Drisdelle had a 40.


Xavier beat Simsbury 13-10 last Friday with offensive production from Frank Romeo and Quinn Zdrojeski and solid play in the net by Grant Barber. If you remember the day, it started to sleet and rain and get a bit windy but the Falcons pushed through it all. ... The Falcons beat Notre Dame 14-7 Wednesday. JJ Ford and Erik Fellenstein each had five goals for the Falcons. Barber had eight saves.


Xavier beat Cheshire and Fairfield Prep on Tuesday to improve to 3-0 behind big performances from KJ Grisham and Garrett Prushinski.


Newtown beat Xavier 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-14) last Friday as Kevin Monaghan had a kill and 12 assists for Xavier while Rory McCormack had an ace and seven digs for the Falcons. .. On Monday, Xavier lost 3-0 to Shelton (25-16, 25-15, 25-22). Ethan Powers had 15 kills and 10 digs. Tom Cullen had five kills and Monaghan had 24 assists and three kills. ... On Thursday Glastonbury beat Xavier 3-2. Glastonbury won the first two sets before Xavier won the next two, including a 26-24 thriller in Set 4. Glastonbury won the final set. Powers had 25 kills and six digs. Monaghan had 37 assists, three kills and four blocks, and Shreyas Vasireddy had five kills and 15 digs.


Xavier held a mini-tournament last Saturday here at the school and won two of three --- 11-2 over Sheehan of Wallingford, 11-1 over Fairfield. The Falcons lost to Middletown 10-4. ... Xavier beat Amity 15-5 Thursday night.
