On Jugs and Grudges, from Brother James Kelly, Principal 1982 - 1991

“Parents occasionally ask what the purpose of Jug (justice under God) is, some have even been so bold as to suggest that we might find some more positive punishment than Jug.  But why tamper with success? Jug does two things which every school boy hates: It wastes his time, and it’s boring. The whole point of Jug is to impress upon the student that actions have consequences.”

And, about getting and giving jugs, “That’s one of the most delightful things about working with teenage boys.  They just don’t hold grudges. I even saw in a number of them a grudging respect for me that I had stuck to my word.”

From Respecting the Man the Boy Will Become, A Parent’s Guide to Loving, Teaching and Raising Teenage Boys, Brother James M. Kelly C.F.X., 1999, St. Xavier High School and Butler Books, pages 47-49.

THE XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL PRAYER

- read at the opening and close of school each day

  Loving Father,

We ask you to protect the students, faculty and staff at Xavier High School.

Guide us to salvation by following the example of Jesus Christ, your Son.

Inspire us with your grace, to seek both academic success and spiritual wisdom as we use your gifts and talents in service to others.

Help us to find the strength and passion to be leaders and pioneers like Theodore James Ryken, the Xaverian Brothers and those who founded our school.

May we, in turn, accept the challenge to spread the Word of God and make the world a better place for all people.

We ask this, through Christ, our Lord. Amen

Saint Francis Xavier pray for us.

- Chris Danko ’11 and Francis Rowland ‘11
