Dear Xavier Families,
I hope this message finds you well and that your family is enjoying a restful and refreshing Spring Break. We look forward to welcoming our students back to campus on Monday, when classes resume with an A Day schedule.
On Monday, April 20, our juniors and seniors will begin the week by participating in our Choices Matter Assembly. This important program centers on the responsibility that comes with getting behind the wheel and the lasting impact of the decisions young drivers make. As we approach prom season, the timing of this message is especially meaningful.
The presentation will run approximately 50 minutes and will include opportunities for students to engage in questions and discussion. Following the presentation, students will take part in several interactive activities designed to reinforce the program’s message. These include "Walking the Line" while wearing impairment simulation goggles and participating in our driving Oculus station, both of which provide powerful, hands-on perspectives on the dangers of impaired driving.
As we move further into the spring season, a reminder that seniors are now permitted to wear secondary dress for the remainder of the school year. Underclassmen will be allowed to transition to secondary dress beginning on Monday, May 4.
We are grateful for your continued partnership in helping guide our students toward safe and responsible choices, both in and out of the classroom.
Enjoy the remainder of the break, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on campus soon.
I wanted to share an excerpt Sunday's Gospel from Luke 24: 32.
Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us."
Luke 24:32 sits in the quiet aftermath of recognition. The disciples do not realize who walked beside them until He is gone, and only then do they look back and understand what they felt all along. Their hearts had been stirring, catching fire in a way they could not yet name. It was not spectacle. It was not obvious. It was something deeper, truth unfolding slowly and gently along the road.
That is where its significance lives.
It reminds us that transformation does not always announce itself in the moment. Often, it is only in reflection that we see what was really happening, how we were being shaped, challenged, and opened.
And that is where it connects to Xavier.
Because what happens at Xavier rarely shows up all at once. It is not just in the big moments, the wins, the honors, the milestones parents can easily point to. It is in the daily walk. A classroom discussion that stays with a student longer than expected. A practice that teaches more than the game. A conversation with a teacher, a coach, or a brother that plants something beneath the surface.
At the time, it might not look like much.
But later, something clicks.
A student recognizes a confidence he did not have before. A sense of purpose. A deeper understanding of who he is and who he is called to be. And maybe, like the disciples, he looks back and realizes that something was happening in him all along.
"Our hearts were burning."
At Xavier, that quiet fire is the work.
God Bless!
Mr. Cerreta '01 President, Xavier High School
