Xavier High School Parent Weekly Newsletter - November 6

Dear Xavier Families,

Earlier this week one of our families experienced a tremendous tragedy and we ask that you please keep the Kamp family in your prayers. They suffered an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with them during this time of profound grief. We pray that the Lord brings comfort, peace, and strength to the Kamp family and to all those who love them. Many members of our community have reached out with care and compassion, asking how they can help. That spirit of generosity and togetherness is what makes Xavier such a special place. The family is still grieving heavily, and as a community, we remain committed to walking beside them for the long term. As opportunities arise to offer support, we will be sure to share them.

On Monday morning, our freshmen and transfer students heard from John Halligan, who spoke about the devastating effects of cyberbullying. Mr. Halligan shared his own story as a father whose 13-year-old son, Ryan, took his life in 2003 after enduring relentless bullying both in school and online. His message was powerful, emotional, and necessary. It reminded all of the importance of kindness, vigilance, and compassion in the digital age. A link will soon be sent to families for a virtual presentation, which we strongly encourage all parents to watch and discuss together.

This week, we also held our Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday evening, with additional meetings scheduled for tonight. These conversations are an important part of our shared commitment to helping your son grow spiritually, academically, and personally. Communication between our faculty and families is essential to the success of every student, and we're deeply grateful for the partnership that continues to define our Xavier community.

Finally, we will enjoy an extended weekend in celebration of our tremendous success in this year's Mercy/Xavier Walk-A-Thon. There will be no school and the offices will be closed on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Classes will resume on Wednesday, which will be a B Day.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and for the love and strength you bring to the Xavier community.

I wanted to share this passage from our XBSS Partners in Mission document:

"Compassion compels us in a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School community to look at life through the eyes of Christ, to encounter those who suffer, to accompany them, and to seek appropriate action to alleviate hardship. This allows us to be the eyes, the ears, and the hands of the loving God."

Each week we share a reflection from this foundational document as a reminder of what it means to be part of a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School. It is our responsibility and our privilege to carry forward the mission and charism of the Xaverian Brothers in all that we do, ensuring that faith, compassion, and service remain at the heart of the Xavier experience.

Here are this week's updates and announcements...

- For serious reasons a student may be dismissed early from school by bringing an explanatory note requesting permission from his parent to the Dean of Students by 8:10 am. Failure to do so will result in a detention. Medical appointments should not be scheduled during school time if possible. Any student dismissed before the end of period 5/5a will be ineligible to participate in or attend any athletic or extracurricular activity on that school day. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the Dean of Students.

- Important notice for all parents! Parents are reminded that their son's grades are always visible via OnCampus. As the year continues, parents are encouraged to periodically check their son's progress. If questions or concerns arise from these check-ins, parents are encouraged to reach out to their son's teacher(s).

- Xavier will be hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Tuesday, November 18th. Any student who is 16 or older as of the 18th is eligible to donate. If a student is 16, they need a parental consent form which can be found here (hard copies will also be available at our sign-up in the dining hall). Please encourage your son to sign up and donate if they are eligible. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Mr. David Applegate '98.

- Parents of Fall Athletes: Reminder that parent pick up after practices/games should be in the back of the school and not along the side of the building.  Parents must stay out of the bus pick up/drop off lane. It has been clearly painted and marked on the side of the building.

- Winter Sports Registration opened on Tuesday, October 14th. Please see the email from Mr. DeConti with the link to register.

- A reminder that all student athletes are required to have a physical on file in the nurse's office. Physicals are valid for 13 months from the date of the exam.

- Reminder to all Parents: On the first Friday of each month, the Ryken Society holds a canned food drive for the Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown. Please remind your sons to Be a Man and Bring a Can!

- Sophomore & Junior Students and Parents: PSAT scores are now available! Please log in to your College Board account to view them. If you have trouble accessing your account, try resetting your password. If you're still unable to view your scores, please stop by the School Counseling Office for assistance.

Seniors: As you continue working on your college applications, please don't hesitate to reach out to your school counselor with any questions or to schedule a meeting as needed. Also, be sure to let us know if you add any new colleges to your list so we can send the necessary documents on your behalf.

- Scholarships for our senior students are now available. You can review the scholarships in Naviance to search for ones relevant to your son.

- Senior and Junior Parents Note! In the coming weeks, Xavier will host admission representatives from colleges across the United States. Please encourage your son to check Naviance to sign up for these visits.

- Here is the list of schools that will be attending the week of November 10th: Elms College & Mount St. Mary College.

- ASSE International is partnering with Xavier High School to welcome international high school exchange students, ages 15-18, into your family and create bonds that will last a lifetime. Hosting an international student offers a unique cultural exchange experience for both the student and your family.
