Xavier High School Parent Weekly Newsletter - October 3

Xavier High School logo
Dear Xavier Families,

It's hard to believe, but the first month of the school year is already behind us. The year is flying by, and we've now reached the halfway point of the first marking period. Grades are available in OnCampus, and we are pleased with the effort and dedication our Falcons are showing in the classroom.

Thursday was a special day for our seniors, as the Class of 2026 participated in the annual Senior Field Day which was held this year at Sonny's Place in Somers. This long-standing tradition gives our seniors a chance to take a well-deserved break, blow off some steam, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood with their classmates. It was a day filled with fun, laughter, and lasting memories.

We also want to remind you that fundraising for the 2025 Mercy/Xavier Walk-A-Thon is well underway. This is our only student-driven fundraiser of the year, and all gifts go directly to Xavier's Annual Fund, which supports every aspect of student life, including Financial Aid. Please encourage your sons to set up their fundraising pages and share them widely with family, friends, neighbors, local businesses and on social media. Every contribution, big or small, makes a meaningful difference. To make the experience more rewarding and build community spirit, we've added fun incentives for our students as they reach their individual goals and our school-wide goals. Stay tuned to learn more!

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of Xavier and our mission.

I want to share this passage from our XBSS Partners in Mission document:

"Simplicity frees the heart, the mind, and the soul for the work of evangelization and education. The Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School community encourages us to live and work in ways that respect our vocation to be stewards of God's creation."

- Wednesday, October 8 will be an SAT School Day for those Seniors who have registered to take the test. All other Seniors are encouraged to use the day for college visits. PSATs will be administered to all Sophomores and Juniors; there will be a Freshman Program during testing. All students are asked to bring their laptops charged to school and bring their charging cord. Dismissal is 11:30 a.m.

- For serious reasons a student may be dismissed early from school by bringing an explanatory note requesting permission from his parent to the Dean of Students by 8:10 am. Failure to do so will result in a detention. Medical appointments should not be scheduled during school time if possible. Any student dismissed before the end of period 5/5a will be ineligible to participate in or attend any athletic or extracurricular activity on that school day. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the Dean of Students.

- The Brother Houlihan Memorial Beautification Day (Houli Day) will take place on October 11th from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at Xavier High School. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni will be receiving an email via Sign Up Genius to volunteer to clean up various aspects of the school's campus. The day will begin with prayer and a brief presentation about Brother Robert Houlihan. There will be various refreshments available throughout the day for all participants. Clubs and teams are encouraged to sign up in groups to generate a greater sense of fellowship and camaraderie.

- Xavier's fall Honor Society Induction is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 16, from 6:30-8 pm. Letters to all eligible nominees will be sent out soon. Acceptance into Xavier's Honor Societies must be returned to Administrative Assistant Mrs. Keereweer in the Main Office no later than Thursday, Oct. 9. Students deciding to be inducted must attend an induction practice on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Questions pertaining to eligibility should be directed to departmental moderators.

- Photo Retakes: A Retake Day is scheduled for October 9th. Please read the insert in the photo packages about the photographer's retake policy. Students who want their picture retaken must sign up with Mrs. Braychak in the Main Office.

- Important notice for all parents! Parents are reminded that their son's grades are always visible via OnCampus. As the year continues, parents are encouraged to periodically check their son's progress. If questions or concerns arise from these check-ins, parents are encouraged to reach out to their son's teacher(s).

- Parents of fall athletes: This is a reminder to parents that Student-Athletes must be in school for the day in order to participate in their practices or contests. If your son is absent from school, they are not allowed to attend practice or games unless they receive permission from Ms. Drewry. Any athlete who is found in violation of this policy will be immediately sent home from their event and face additional school consequences. Additionally, athletes who arrive late or leave early, must be present for 5 full class periods in order to be eligible for athletics.

- Parents of Fall Athletes: Reminder that parent pick up after practices/games should be in the back of the school and not along the side of the building.  Parents must stay out of the bus pick up/drop off lane. It has been clearly painted and marked on the side of the building.

- Reminder for PSAT/SAT Day Please be sure your son brings a fully charged computer and a power cord to the test. If he doesn't bring a calculator, the online Desmos calculator built into the app is available.

- Senior and Junior Parents Note! In the coming weeks, Xavier will host admission representatives from colleges across the United States. Please encourage your son to check Naviance to sign up for these visits.

- Freshman Parents - We have begun meeting individually with our freshmen. If you have any concerns or feel your son would benefit from meeting with his counselor sooner rather than later, please don't hesitate to reach out.

- Seniors - A reminder to schedule your college meeting with your school counselor. Application deadlines are approaching quickly, and we require at least three weeks' notice to prepare and submit your materials on time.

- Here is the list of schools that will be attending the week of October 6th: Central Connecticut State University, Quinnipiac university, University of Chicago, University of Scranton, Marist University, George Mason University, University of Maryland, Springfield College, Rutgers University, and Western New England University.

- Registration for our annual Fall Open House on Sunday October 26 is open! This is one of the biggest days of the year for Xavier. Please share this link with any families or friends that may be interested in attending Xavier. We greatly appreciate your help!
