Xavier High School Parent Weekly Newsletter - September 12

Xavier High School logo
Dear Xavier Families,

Last week, 120 members of the Class of 2029 joined Mercy freshmen for the annual Freshmen Frolic. It was an afternoon of laughter, new friendships, and community spirit. Thank you for your promptness in picking up the boys afterward. Your support helped the event run smoothly.

This past Sunday, we gathered for Grandparents Mass, a beloved tradition at Xavier. It was a blessing to welcome grandparents to campus and to celebrate the important role they play in the lives of our young men. At Xavier, community is not just something we talk about, it is something we live together, generation by generation. I want to thank the Campus Ministry office and the Alumni & Development office for putting together a wonderful event for our community.

On Tuesday, our entire student body and faculty came together for the annual Safety and Respect Assembly. This important gathering served as a reminder that the well-being of every member of our community depends on understanding and following the safety protocols in place, and on treating one another with dignity and care.

Finally, as a school rooted in faith, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the courage of the first responders and all who answered the call that day. We hold in prayer the families forever changed, and we recommit ourselves to living lives of service, faith, and compassion.

I want to share this passage from our XBSS Partners in Mission document:

"Through compassion, and in imitation of Theodore James Ryken, we serve others to manifest God’s ‘care and compassionate love to those who are separated and estranged, not only from their neighbors, but also from their own uniqueness; to those who suffer from want, neglect, and injustice."

Here are this week's updates and announcements...

- On Tuesday, September 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Xavier will be hosting its Parent Mini-Schedule Night! The purpose of this event is to provide parents with an opportunity to meet their son's teachers and to familiarize themselves with their son's schedule. Parents are asked not to enter the building before 6:15 p.m. The night will begin with a short meeting/presentation in Kohs Gymnasium. Room assignments will be posted throughout the building to aid parents in finding their sons' homerooms. The official mini-schedule will commence

- Parents of fall athletes: This is a reminder to parents that Student-Athletes must be in school for the day in order to participate in their practices or contests. If your son is absent from school, they are not allowed to attend practice or games unless they receive permission from Ms. Drewry. Any athlete who is found in violation of this policy will be immediately sent home from their event and face additional school consequences. Additionally, athletes who arrive late or leave early, must be present for 5 full class periods in order to be eligible for athletics.

- Parents of Fall Athletes: Reminder that parent pick up after practices/games should be in the back of the school and not along the side of the building.  Parents must stay out of the bus pick up/drop off lane. It has been clearly painted and marked on the side of the building.

- Senior and Junior Parents Note! In the coming weeks, Xavier will host admission representatives from colleges across the United States. Please encourage your son to check Naviance to sign up for these visits.

- Here is the list of schools that will be attending the week of September 15th: Mitchell College, UCONN, Lynn University, Southern Connecticut State, Roger Williams University, University of Hartford, University of New England, Syracuse University, Bates College, Iona University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Albertus Magnus College, College of Charleston, Providence College, The Catholic University of America, UMass Amherst, Western New England University, University of Rhode Island, Hofstra University, Elon University, and Emmanuel College.

- Registration for our annual Fall Open House on Sunday October 26 is open! This is one of the biggest days of the year for Xavier. Please share this link with any families or friends that may be interested in attending Xavier. We greatly appreciate your help! If you have any questions, please email Director of Enrollment, Mr. Chris Sansone '06

Safe Environments Abuse Prevention Training

In the Diocese of Norwich, all volunteers who have regular contact with minors, all employees, all clergy, and all religious, are required to complete safe environments training. This training is monitored by the Office for Safe Environments (OSE).

In addition, this training is also available to any parishioner, or parent of a parochial school child, regardless of whether or not they wish to volunteer at their parish or school. It contains important information about keeping our children and youth safe.

The Diocese of Norwich offers two Praesidium programs. Both cover the same material, just in different formats. You can take the on-line program, Praesidium, or attend a one-time DVD presentation, Called to Protect.

The in person Called to Protect training classes are available on a very limited basis. Praesidium on line is available and is the preferred training at this time. For more information about in person training availability, contact the OSE.  If you received training as a presenter of Called to Protect and are willing to conduct classes, please contact the Office for Safe Environment as soon as possible.

The OSE can be contacted to provide adult programs for parents, parishioners and all interested in keeping our youth safe, such as Setting Boundaries.  A convenient time can be arranged.

Please contact the Child Advocate at your parish or school office in order to be enrolled, or for more information.
