Dear Xavier Community,
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Brother Thomas Ryan, C.F.X., a beloved member of the Xavier faculty and a cherished presence in our community for more than 30 years. Brother Ryan passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this weekend, leaving behind a legacy that has touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff.
For over five decades, Brother Ryan dedicated his life to education and service, embodying the Xaverian values of humility, simplicity, trust, zeal, and compassion. His journey as a Xaverian brother began in 1962, and from his early days as a student at Cardinal Hayes High School to his many years teaching and serving as an administrator at Xavier, Brother Ryan's mission was always clear: to shape minds and hearts with love, care, and a quiet, enduring commitment to the students he so deeply cherished.
Whether organizing the next day's Civics lessons, overseeing substitute schedules, or serving as the master of ceremonies at Commencement, Brother Ryan's dedication was unwavering. He often spoke of the joy he found in teaching, especially the connection he shared with his students. As he would say, "It's always been the kids," reflecting on a career that spanned generations of Xavier graduates.
Brother Ryan's absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy endures in the lives he shaped and the community he helped build. As we remember him, let us hold his family, friends, and fellow Xaverian brothers in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Details about services and memorial arrangements will be shared with the Xavier community as they become available.
Classes are cancelled on Monday, September 16. The building will be open for anyone who wishes to come to Xavier. Counselors and pastoral advisors will be available to those in need. Because Mercy is holding classes, busses will be running normally for any Xavier student who wishes to come in for support.
May Brother Ryan rest in peace and may his faith and commitment to others continue to inspire us all.
There will be a wake on Sunday, September 22, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Kohs Gymnasium for Brother Ryan . His funeral will be held Monday, September 23, at 10:00 am.
As we remember his life of faith, service, and dedication, we encourage you to share personal reflections that highlight the impact he made on so many lives. Whether it’s a cherished moment, a special lesson, or a favorite photograph, your contributions will help honor Brother Ryan’s legacy and ensure his spirit remains a lasting part of the Xavier family.
