Each year the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS) Network asks each of their 13 schools to select an adult member from its school community as the recipient of the Theodore James Ryken Award.
The Ryken Award recognizes the devotedness of the adult members in Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools. It is given to an individual for his or her commitment to Theodore Ryken’s vision and dedication to a XBSS school. The recipient through their daily actions also strives to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, participates in the school’s community of faith and nurtures members of the community, recognizes the talents of each individual and the importance of educating the whole person, and finally fulfills the Gospel call to peace and justice.
This year’s recipient from Xavier is Mr. Peter Lyons. His life and work reflect the heart and soul of Xavier High School. As a Catholic, Xaverian Brothers sponsored school, our mission aims to foster the spiritual, academic, and physical growth of its students- always challenging each young man to use his God-given gifts and talents in service to others, and to live out our motto: “Be A Man.”
Mr. Lyons is, in every dimension, a living expression of that mission. His Catholic faith shines through not in grand speeches, but in the quiet compassion, generous heart, and humble leadership they bring to our halls each day. He doesn’t wait to be asked – rather he is always the one reaching out, the one offering time, a listening ear, and heartfelt support to students and colleagues alike.
Mr. Lyons embodies the qualities of a true servant leader. He forms deep, enduring personal relationships that outlast a single school year and most of the time even go well beyond the four years of a student’s career at Xavier. His kindness and generosity are not seasonal, but constant, making Mr. Lyons someone others turn to in times of need, guidance, or just to be heard. Through his example, they model what it means to be a man of faith, integrity, empathy, and selflessness.
“As a teacher and as a friend, Mr. Lyons doesn’t just teach the Xaverian values- he lives them, day after day,” Xavier High School President Nick Cerreta ’01 said. “Because of this, many of our students and fellow staff come to see not only a trusted mentor, but a role model whose character exemplifies the best of what it means to be part of the Xavier community.”
“Pete has been a steady and invaluable presence in my own life,” Mr. Cerreta added. “He is someone I can call without hesitation, no matter the circumstances, and has always offered me support, guidance, friendship, and love when I needed it most. I am profoundly grateful for the encouragement he has shown me over the years, and I consider it one of my great blessings to walk this Xaverian journey alongside him each and every day.”
With deep gratitude and admiration, we are proud to present the 2025 Ryken Award to Mr. Peter Lyons. A humble servant whose life gives meaning to our mission, and whose presence enriches us all. Please join us in congratulating a truly one-of-a-kind human being.
