Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week!
Because we had February break last week, we will be recognizing four athletes.
Ethan Gaines (Basketball)
Going back two weeks, our first athlete comes from the freshman basketball team after hitting what might be the shot heard around the world. Freshman Basketball had only lost two games all season, and Wilbur Cross was one of those losses. When they met again in our gym, the game went back and forth. The Falcons built a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Wilbur Cross stormed back, tying the game with just 5.5 seconds left. Coach Nelson took a time out and drew up the perfect play. The ball was inbounded to point guard Ethan Gaines, who drove the length of the floor and laid the ball in over two defenders at the buzzer to win the game. Congratulations, Ethan.
Luke Beasley (Rifle)
Luke Beasley currently holds the highest score in the High School Conference in the NRA 4-Position Sectional competition. Competing in this national event, Luke fired 40 record shots across four positions in just 45 minutes, finishing with an outstanding score of 384 out of 400. That performance places him among the top high school marksmen in the country.
Ben Romero & James Haslam (Wrestling)
Our wrestling team won its sixth straight Class L State Championship on Saturday. While the team had four individual state champions—including our school’s first ever four-time state champion—two athletes exceeded expectations. Both Ben Romero and James Haslam entered the tournament seeded low, meaning they faced some of the toughest competition in their weight classes. Both battled through six matches and upset higher-seeded opponents along the way. Ben finished 4th in his weight class, and James finished 6th, earning critical team points and helping secure another state title. Both will also be competing in the State Open later today.
