At Xavier, some of the most important lessons do not come with a grade.
They happen in hallways and classrooms, on athletic fields and during service opportunities. They happen when a student notices someone who needs help, chooses integrity when no one is watching or quietly puts the needs of another person ahead of his own.
Those moments are at the heart of Xavier High School's new Xavier Medallion Program, an initiative designed to recognize students who demonstrate the five Xaverian values of Humility, Trust, Zeal, Compassion and Simplicity through their actions.
The program reflects an essential part of Xavier's mission: educating young men means more than preparing them academically. It also means forming young men of character who understand their responsibility to one another and to the communities they will one day lead.
A Xavier Medallion may be awarded when a student goes above and beyond what is ordinarily expected and demonstrates one of the school's five Xaverian values while representing Xavier.
That could mean quietly helping someone without seeking recognition, demonstrating honesty and responsibility when no one is watching, taking the initiative to make a positive difference, recognizing when another person needs help or choosing what is right over personal recognition or gain.
The distinction is intentional. The Medallion Program is not designed to reward routine accomplishments or everyday expectations. Instead, it seeks to recognize those moments when a student's character stands out.
Faculty and staff members may nominate students after witnessing an action that reflects one of the five values. Nominations will then be reviewed by a committee to determine whether the action meets the criteria for recognition.
Students selected for the honor will receive a Xavier Medallion representing the particular value they demonstrated. Recipients will also be recognized during Xavier's monthly Masses, allowing the school community to celebrate both the student and the example he has set for others.
The long-term goal is an ambitious one: Xavier hopes every student will strive to earn all five Medallions during his four years at the school.
But collecting five Medallions is not really the point.
The hope is that students will spend their Xavier experience intentionally searching for opportunities to practice Humility, Trust, Zeal, Compassion and Simplicity until those values become something more than words associated with the school.
They become habits.
They become part of who a Xavier graduate is.
Success at Xavier has always extended beyond grades, championships, clubs and individual accomplishments. It can also be found in the quieter moments: serving another person, doing the right thing, stepping forward when something needs to be done or offering compassion when someone needs it most.
The Xavier Medallion Program gives the school an opportunity to notice and celebrate those moments.
And over the course of four years, those seemingly small moments can add up to something much larger: the formation of young men prepared not only for what comes next, but prepared to make a difference when they get there.
